Baseline History

Baseline Data Services, LLC came into existence as a result of a long history and business lineage between Lance Thompson and Robert Church. Thompson’s initial company was incorporated in the early 1980’s for the purpose of leasing and selling IBM and other manufacturers’ computer equipment to the financial services industry and general businesses across the country. Robert Church and his company were responsible for the programming, installation and training of these systems, so the two of them joining forces was a natural progression of their relationship.

Over the years, thousands of midrange computers and peripherals were sold and installed to over 2,500 banks nationally and many other general businesses such as manufacturers, distributors and governmental agencies. By the late 1980’s Thompson and Church focused entirely upon the financial industry and became well-known nationally as a premier vendor of IBM, NCR and other manufacturers of computers, check processing transports and ATM’s. Due to their operations expertise, soon thereafter customers requested that the company build and manage a disaster recovery facility to better meet the financial service industry’s specific and federally-regulated disaster recovery needs.

This challenge was soon met with Thompson and Church building facilities in Michigan and Indiana. Plainfield, Indiana became the dominant facility for disaster recovery and was very well staffed with qualified engineers. The company was centrally located near Indianapolis, with access to a major airport and highways. Business continued to grow to the point where it gained the attention of the Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC auditors for the high-level of service they were providing their banking clients. In approximately 1994, the Michigan company added a new division, which was responsible for processing checking transactions, including encoding, imaging, balancing and moving funds for a number of banks in the Midwest.

Over 10 years, the check-processing division grew to include the Indiana facility and provided services to over 50 banks and over 350,000 checks were processed daily. Eventually, the decision was made, due to volume and growth, to sell the check processing business to a publicly-traded company to ensure continued growth and financial stability in the daily processing business. At that time, all disaster recovery customers were transferred to a newly formed company, Baseline Data Services, LLC.

It is important to note that the staff responsible for disaster recovery services remained with Baseline to ensure uninterrupted customer support. Baseline was created to strengthen and enhance the core business of disaster recovery. New services have been added to meet the total requirements of our customers’ disaster recovery needs. These products include EVault online data protection, virtual server disaster recovery and document imaging ASP (application service provider) just to name a few.
